ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, Thursday September 19, 2013: September 16th, 2013 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (World Ozone Day) under the theme: “A Healthy Atmosphere: the Future We Want”.

In commemoration of the day, the National Ozone Unit of the Energy Division of the Ministry of Finance and Energy hosted two (2) One-day workshops, on September 16th and 17th, 2013, for Customs Brokers and Importers of Refrigerants on the topic “Documentation, Identification and Reporting of Trade in Ozone depleting Substances”. The workshops were held at the Horizon Plaza Building on St. John Street, St. George’s. Over forty (40) Officers participated in the workshops.

Some of the topics discussed were:

(1) The Montreal Protocol and the Science of the Ozone layer;

(2) International and National Response to Ozone Layer Depletion;

(3) Illegal Trade in Ozone Depleting Substances;

(4) Harmonised System (HS) Tariff Classification; and

(5) National Import/Export E-Licensing System

The facilitators of the workshop were Mr. Gerard James, Consultant, Mr. Rene Parkes of the ASYCUDA Office and Mr. Leslie Smith of the National Ozone Unit.

Funding for the workshop was provided by the Multi-lateral Fund Secretariat of the Montreal Protocol through the United Nations Environment Programme.

This year marked the 26th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
