Summary of Day 1 of the Regional Network Meeting of Ozone Offcier of the English Speaking Caribbean and Haiti, St. Kitt’s & Nevis

Opening Ceremony: The Ministry of Sustainable Development of the Federation of St. Kitt’s & Nevis hosted the opening ceremony.  The feauture address was delivered by: the Prime Minister of the Federation, Hon. Denzil Douglas, Mr. Marco Gozales, Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat and Mr. Marco Pinzon of the United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNEP, ROLAC).

Presentations: During the morning session, Dr, Gilbert Bankobeza presented on Compliance Status of the Montreal Protocol in the Caribbean Network, Major Decisions of the 24th Meeting of the Parties and Major Issues to be addressed in the 33rd Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) Meeting, on behalf of the Ozone Secretariat.

During the afternoon session, presentations were made by Mr. Alejandro Ramirez of the Multi-lateral Fund Secretariat on Recent Decisions of the Executive Committee and the implications for the Caribbean Region, (via Skype) . The National Ozone Officer of Belize, Mr. Valentino Blanco, presented a Case Study on the Certification and Licensing of Technicians in Belize.

Day one concluded with a presentation from Dr. Marissa Gowrie from Trinidad and Tobago, who presented on the Development of a Course Outline by the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Ozone Depleting Substances as part of the MSc. in Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.

All members of the network except Suriname were present at the meeting.
