On Saturday April 24, 2010, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) in the Energy Division of the Ministry of Finance came together with the Grenada Refrigeration, Air-conditioning and Ventilation Association (GRAVA) and SP’s International to celebrate International Earth Day.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared April 22nd as International Earth Day. While the international community commemorated this day on Thursday last week, the above mentioned bodies came together to celebrate this day on Saturday April 24th at the Spiceland Mall car park, in the form a of Hydrocarbon Retrofit Demonstration for Mobile Air-Conditioning (MAC) Systems.

There is a major thrust by the National Ozone Unit to ensure that the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning industry in Grenada use eco-friendly products. Therefore, this particular exercise was chosen in an attempt to bring awareness to the motoring public on how they can protect the Ozone Layer, safeguard the climate system and derive energy savings by using Hydrocarbon Refrigerants as a replacement for the refrigerants currently being used in vehicle AC systems. The initiative also assists in ensuring that the Grenadian public benefit from a more cost efficient, and environmentally safe product. Part of the day’s exercise included the free inspection of vehicle AC systems and counseling and advice to vehicle owners on the same.

Mr. Sebastian Paul, Managing Director of SP’s International Trading Ltd., a leading importer and distributor of refrigerants and one the region’s only suppliers of these Ozone friendly refrigerants, participated in the event. In commenting on the event’s success, he said, “I am extremely pleased with the amount of public interest in creating a cleaner environment; we will continue to seek out products that are not just cost effective and of a superior quality but ones which are also healthy for our environment. ”

The event was also attended by the Minister of the Environment, Hon. Michael Church, and the head of the National Ozone Unit, Mr. Leslie Smith.

Other similar events are being planned for various other locations throughout the country over the next few months. The public is therefore encouraged to stay tuned to the local media for the next activity, and to continue to do their part to create a cleaner environment.
